AUDITION INFORMATION

All Roosevelt students are welcome — no experience required! Please register here.

Every student who auditions will be offered at least one spot in an after-school contemporary music and performing arts class.

  • Musical Theatre / Show Choir:

    • Learn the singing part of “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles. (See lyrics below).

    • Learn the lyrics to La Bamba (see below—yes, en Español!)

    • Prepare up to one minute of a song of your choice (optional).

  • Rock Band / Guitar / Jazz Band:

    • All Students: Learn the singing part of “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles. (See lyrics below).

    • No experience on an instrument: Just learn the Twist & Shout song to sing in a group.

    • Drummers: Play a basic rock beat to the best of your ability.

    • Other instruments: On an instrument of your choice, prepare “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles. (See chord chart below)

      • Chord Progression (Key of concert D):
        Verse/Chorus: D – G – A – D (repeat) Bridge: G – A – D – G – A – D

    • In addition to the requirements above, students may also perform a short song/scales/skills etc.  of their choice to highlight additional skills.

    • OPTIONAL + ADVANCED STUDENTS ADDITIONAL AUDITION PIECES

      • All Advanced Students/Other Students Optional: Learn the lyrics to La Bamba, and play in the key of D! (Yes, the lyrics en Espanol!)

      • Jazz Band Only: Perform a 12-bar blues and join a short jam session.
        (More details and chord charts will be provided after registration.)

Note for Rock Band & Jazz Band Auditions

If you would like to audition on an instrument not typically listed (for example, cello, trumpet, alto sax, etc.), please email Ms. Smith to request alternate sheet music in the correct key. We will do our best to provide parts so you can play along.

Note for All Students on End Time

Audition End-time will be announced after registration closes and will reflect the amount of children interested in participating, but will likely end between 3-4 for most students. Those auditioning for advanced Rock band and Jazz should prepare to stay the latest.
