About After School Enrichment (ASE) at Roosevelt

Roosevelt’s ASE program offers students a wide range of opportunities to explore the arts, STEM, athletics, and leadership beyond the school day. From rock band and theatre to robotics, gardening, and tennis, ASE classes are designed to spark curiosity, build skills, and connect students with mentors and peers. Programs are free for Roosevelt families thanks to RooFriends and community partners, and most run once a week after school each semester.

Our program is very popular and many classes receive more applicants than spaces available. ALL students, continuing and new, must submit a registration form. As this program is funded by RooFriends, enrollment in many classes is conducted by lottery amongst the students who rank the class as their first choice before the registration deadline (August 21st). Students not selected in the lottery will be reviewed based on their additional choices and assigned to classes if space allows. After this, if some classes have additional openings, students may be offered a second class. We hope to offer every student at least one enrichment class. If your student wants to participate in an ASE class with a friend, please make sure both students select the same first choice class.

Young Lions Jazz, Advanced Rock Band, and Roosevelt Theatre are audition-based programs (see details in class descriptions).

In order to grow this program and increase capacity for more students, RooFriends needs more money! Most ASE classes cost between $100-$200 per student.  Donations of any size are welcome and will help us serve more students!

Course Catalog

  • Introduction to Musical Theatre with Ms. Jasmine
    Mondays | 3:30–5:00 | Auditorium | Sep 14 - Dec 7 | No class Oct 12 and Nov 23

    Jefferson’s favorite theatre teacher is heading to Roosevelt! Students will dance, sing, and have fun learning a few numbers. A short winter performance is in the works!

    This program runs fall semester only.

    Roosevelt Choir
    Thursdays | 3:15–4:45 | TBA | Sep 17 - Dec 10 | No class Nov 26
    Learn new songs, build confidence and knowledge of music theory with teaching artist Ms. Megan.

    Roosevelt Theatre Company / Mainstage Production

    Stay tuned for details about a spring mainstage production! Auditions will be held in December and rehearsals will run January - April Mondays/select Wednesdays.


    Dance with Ms. Viviana
    Mondays | 3:15–4:45 | Dance Room 106 | Sep 14 - Dec 7 | No class Oct 12 and Nov 23
    Explore different dance styles, from modern and hip hop to cultural forms. Build technique, coordination, and confidence with teaching artist Ms. Viviana.

  • Beginning Rock Band

    Thursdays | 3:15–4:45 | Auditorium | Sep 17 - Dec 10 | No class Nov 26
    Students play guitar, bass, drums, keys, and sing in a real band with instructors from Apt4Music. This group is intended for beginning and intermediate students and auditions are not required. All students are welcome to participate as long as they are ready to be respectful, work with others, and commit to being a positive part of the band. If interest exceeds capacity, placement will be done by lottery and instrument selection.

    Advanced Rock Band

    Fridays | 3:15–4:45 | Auditorium | Sep 18 - Dec 11 | No class Nov 27
    Students play guitar, bass, drums, keys, and sing with instructors from Apt4Music!

    Audition required. Auditions will be held by Apt4Music on August 26th at 1:30 pm:

    1. Prepare one song of your choice that demonstrates your skills on your instrument or voice. You may perform with a backing track if you choose.

    2. You may be asked to play something provided by the instructor or jam with the instructor on your instrument. This helps us see how well you read, listen, follow along, and play as part of a group.

    3. Students who cannot attend on the 26th can submit a short video.


    Jazz Band
    Tuesdays | 3:15–4:45 | Auditorium | Sep 15 - Dec 8 | No class Oct 13 and Nov 24
    Perform jazz standards, learn improvisation, and develop ensemble skills. Audition required. In partnership with Young Lions Jazz Conservatory.

    Auditions will be held on 8/25. Audition process:

    1. ‍Register with ASE and select Young Lions Jazz

    2. Prepare for your instrument’s audition using the FUNdamentals music tracks:

    3. DO NOT register on the YLJC website!!

    4. Sign up for a timeslot when ASE emails you the Google Doc, or, if your student is unable to attend 8/25, prepare a video audition and email it to ase@roofriends.org by 8/24

    5. Auditions will be conducted by Young Lions. Due to the high level of interest in the program, placement is not guaranteed for any student—new or returning—as space is limited. Placement is based on audition performance and instrument proficiency.

    This is a year-long program and rehearsals will resume in January.

  • Film Production – The Roosevelt Film Society | Wednesdays | 1:15-3:00 | TBA | Sep 16 - Dec 9 No class Nov 11 and Nov 25
    Lights, camera, action! Students learn how to make short films from start to finish: screenwriting, acting for the camera, directing, cinematography, editing, and behind-the-scenes production. Facilitated in partnership with Media Arts Center of San Diego.


    Mini Crafting
    Tuesdays | 3:15-4:30 | Room 362 | Sep 15 - Nov 17
    A crafting club for students who love all things mini! Complete fun one-day mini projects or take on longer challenges across the semester. No experience necessary—just excitement to create!

    Art Studio Club with Ms. Vinnard
    Thursdays | 3:20-4:20 | Room 360 | Sep 17 - Dec 10 | No class Oct 8 or Nov 26
    Students will explore their choice of watercolor or acrylic paints, colored pencils, art markers, watercolor pencils, pastels, collage, drawing pencils, or rubber stamps in the calm and peaceful environment of Room 360. Bring your creativity, because each artist will decide how to demonstrate their talents to the best of their own ability! 

  • Roosevelt Robotics Team (Two-Day Program)

    Mondays / Fridays | 3:25–5:00 | Room 809 | TBD - Dec 11 | No class Sep 7, 11, 14, 18, Oct 12, Nov 23, Nov 27

    Class will be held early on minimum days on 10/30, 11/20 and 12/4
    Design, build, and program robots! Students work in teams, solve challenges, and compete in VEX competitions against other schools in California. Robotics is a two-day program (Mondays + Fridays).

    Garden (Dig Down Deep)
    Mondays | 3:15–4:45 | School Garden | Sep 14 - Dec 7 | No class Oct 12 and Nov 23
    Get your hands in the soil with Dig Down Deep! Students grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers while learning about ecology, nutrition, and sustainability.


    Girls in Science
    Wednesdays | 1:30–3:00 | Room 902 | Sep 16–Dec 16 | No class Nov 11 and Nov 25
    In partnership with the San Diego Zoo, this program offers hands-on projects, experiments, and mentorship to encourage girls to explore and lead in STEM fields.

  • Fall Tennis
    Wednesday or Friday | Courts
    Learn the fundamentals of tennis, improve your skills, and enjoy friendly matches. Tennis is offered in partnership with the Youth Tennis San Diego (YTSD) program from the Barnes Tennis Center.

    Intermediate/Advanced Tennis (Fridays) | 3:30 - 4:30 | Sep 11 - Nov 13 (Intermediate/Advanced tennis is intended for students with prior tennis experience)

    Wednesday Multi-sport with Coach Shade

    Come out to play with everyone’s favorite flag rugby coach! Students will rotate between sports, including basketball, running, flag football, and flag rugby.

  •  Thanks to RooFriends and community partners, ASE classes are free for students. Families are welcome to make a donation to RooFriends, of any amount, to help us continue to offer amazing ASE programming.

  • Most meet once a week for 1–1.5 hours. Please see individual class descriptions for start and stop dates and times.

  • Maybe - our program is in high demand and our goal is to assign every student to one class. Students are encouraged to select back-up choices as many classes will be enrolled using a lottery. Once every student has been assigned one class (if possible), classes with additional capacity may be offered to students requesting additional classes.

  • Young Lions Jazz, Advanced Rock Band and the Roosevelt Theatre Company mainstage production require auditions. See above for details. Beginning Rock band does not require auditions but may be enrolled using a lottery if requests exceed capacity.

    • Enrichment, not childcare: ASE is designed for students who want to participate in classes and clubs. It is not a drop-in childcare program.

    • Attendance commitment: Parents/students must agree:

      • ASE is not supervised childcare

      • Student is genuinely interested and will participate

      • Regular attendance is expected; notify the ASE Coordinator if absent

      • ASE is device-free (no phones/chromebooks, unless otherwise directed by a teacher)

    • Trial period: If after two weeks a student shows no interest, they may be withdrawn so another student can join.

    • No-show policy: students who never show up for their class will not be eligible for priority registration in the future. If your student changes their mind, please email the teacher and ASE so they can be removed from roster and their space offered to another student.

    • Teacher/Coordinator support: Staff will redirect disengaged students and help find a better fit when possible.

    Parent note: Please discuss choices with your student. ASE is for enrichment, not childcare or casual socializing. If your student just needs after-school supervision, consider the Primetime Program (no cost): https://www.sdusdelo.com/primetime.

  • Attendance is taken daily. Parents may be contacted if a student is absent without notice. If students do not attend classes they will be disenrolled to make room for waitlisted students. Please be mindful of absences as the community fundraises to make these classes available at no cost and we want to be good stewards of these funds.

  • We do our best to place every student in one class. If your student is unassigned or changes their mind after registration, please email ASE to join the waitlist.

  • We do our best to offer a range of programs based on students interests and the goals of the school as a Media Arts and IB Magnet. If you have a specific program that you can help organize we are always interested in expanding the program!

  • No. For safety, all students must be in a supervised program or class after school. Families that prefer daily after-school care are encouraged to consider PrimeTime.

  • Students check in directly with their ASE class instructor in their assigned room.

  • Classes are taught by Roosevelt teachers, community partners, or teaching artists.

  • Yes! Many classes share their work through school concerts and festivals, plays, showcases, community events or the Roosevelt International Film Festival.

  • A limited number of tech/ crew assignments may open closer to the performance – costumes, prop-making, etc. Stay tuned!

  • The ASE program is made possible through parent volunteers, fundraising activists, and community donations. Participating families are encouraged to make a donation, of any amount, to support the program. Parents who are interested in volunteering to teach classes can email ase@roofriends.org!
